01 — What MECS is
A society for the industries that carry everything else
MECS at Penn is a student organization founded in 2026. We study maritime trade, energy systems, and commodity markets together rather than separately, because the people who work in them cannot treat them separately.
We are not a finance club, a sustainability group, or an engineering society. We sit where those subjects meet: vessels and the fuel they burn, ports and the power they draw, cargoes and the capital behind them.
The Society runs on three branches. Members write and publish research, organise conversations with people working in the field, and take on scoped projects for outside organisations.

A cargo is a freight rate, a fuel bill, a berth window, and a financing decision before it is ever a price. We follow it the whole way.

Vessels, charters, freight rates, and the chokepoints that reroute whole trades.
